Raw steel or powder coat

Powder coat is the standard finish on every family. Raw steel is available on the Cowboy line only, it will change, and choosing it is a decision about maintenance rather than about color.

What is actually on offer

Powder coat black is the standard finish across all four families and is what a bridge arrives in unless you have asked otherwise.

Raw steel is available on the Cowboy line only, which is the Kit family ordered without the coating rather than a different bridge. Same 20 ft span, same 4 ton rating in the cataloged configuration, same steel. Galvanizing is not offered.

The part that is easy to get wrong

Roadrunner publishes a 65 year design life, and it is the same for a raw steel bridge when the bridge is coated as recommended.

Those two halves have to be read together. On its own, “same design life” reads as “raw steel needs nothing”, and that is not what it means. Roadrunner’s recommendation is that a bridge bought raw is painted or protective-coated by its owner. The design life assumes somebody does that.

What raw steel does

It oxidizes. The surface changes color over the first months and keeps changing, and how fast depends on where the bridge is: humidity, rainfall, and how close it sits to salt.

Some owners want exactly that. A rust-toned crossing on a ranch or a rural property reads as part of the place in a way that a black powder-coated span does not, and that is a legitimate reason to choose it. What it is not is a lower-maintenance option, and it is not a protective finish.

Choosing between them

Powder coat, if the bridge is on public property, in a coastal or high-humidity environment, somewhere access for maintenance is awkward, or anywhere the appearance is expected to stay as delivered.

Raw steel, if you want the weathered look, the site is dry, and you are willing to coat and maintain it. On the Cowboy that is a real choice with a real reason behind it.

If the deciding factor is price, that is a conversation rather than a rule. The coating is a process cost rather than a structural one, and removing it does not change what the bridge carries.

What we can show you, and what we cannot

There are photographs of raw steel Roadrunner bridges on the gallery: a Cowboy working out on a track, one decked in the shop before it has been outside, a cast plate that has weathered to a grey green, and two uncoated frames still in the building. Between them they cover the range from new steel to well along.

What none of them carries is a date. Nothing on record says how long the weathered one had been out, or in what climate, so the set shows you what raw steel looks like and cannot tell you how long it took to get there. That is the question a buyer actually has, and it is why the finish simulator on the Cowboy page is drawn as flat color and labeled illustrative wherever it appears: how fast a particular bridge changes on a particular site is not something a swatch can predict, and neither is it something five undated photographs can.

Raw steel: what you are choosing

  • Raw steel will oxidize.
  • The appearance will change over time, and it will keep changing.
  • How fast it corrodes, and how far, depends on your environment: humidity, rainfall, salt, and how much of the structure stays wet.
  • Maintenance may be required to keep the steel where you want it.
  • A raw finish is not equivalent to powder-coat protection. Oxidation on these bridges is a surface condition and we will not describe it as a coating.
  • It may not suit every climate or every application.
